Research Article – Circularity Assessment Protocol: Can Tho, Vietnam

A team from the DRAGON Institute at Can Tho University performed fieldwork in the Vietnamese city of Can Tho from October 2020 to January 2021 under the direction and assistance of the Circularity Informatics Lab. The local administration of the city, resilience officers, and a bigger Urban Ocean team all provided assistance with the CAP.

The Circularity Assessment Protocol (CAP) is a systematic assessment diagnostic tool for gathering community-level data on plastic usage and management in order to inform decision-makers. The CAP uses a hub-and-spoke model to represent how consumer plastic comes into a community holistically, is consumed, and flows out, either through waste management systems or leaking into the environment. This model is based on materials flow and systems thinking concepts. Seven spokes comprise the model: input, community, product and material design, use, recycling, end of the cycle, and leakage.
