Singapore Launch National Action Strategy to Address Marine Litter in Singapore

In June 2022, The Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) launched an inaugural National Action Strategy on Marine Litter (NASML), which aims to galvanize a whole-of-nation effort to combat marine litter. This was announced by Mr. Desmond Tan, Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment. As a responsible global citizen, Singapore recognizes our role in contributing to the collective response to tackling marine litter and microplastics. This is why Singapore has released its first National Action Strategy on Marine Litter which aims to summarize and outline Singapore’s various actions and measures to combat the issue of marine litter across six priority areas.

The NASML, which outlines six strategic focus areas tailored to Singapore’s local context, demonstrates Singapore’s commitment to addressing marine litter domestically and internationally:

  1. Reduction of land-based sources of litter
  2. Reduction of sea-based sources of litter
  3. Circular economy approach
  4. Research and development
  5. Maintaining and strengthening outreach and stakeholder engagement
  6. International engagement and collaboration.
