To seize these opportunities, the Framework for Circular Economy for the ASEAN Economic Community was established in 2021 as a guiding principle for ASEAN Member States in transitioning towards circularity. ERIA (Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia) is proud to collaborate with the ASEAN Secretariat in crafting the Framework and other circular initiatives. This comprehensive report serves as a testament to ERIA’s commitment, presenting an overview of the circular economy’s evolution within ASEAN.

The report includes an analysis of the background of the circular economy in ASEAN, an introduction to circular economy policies and their implementation among ASEAN Member States, ongoing challenges, and policy suggestions. Furthermore, it tracks the advancements of each ASEAN Member State, emphasizing key factors such as the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and technological advancements, transparency and accountability, and engagement and collaboration among multiple stakeholders.

We are confident that this report will offer valuable insights towards fostering a resilient, resource-efficient, inclusive, and sustainable ASEAN economy. ERIA remains steadfast in its dedication and eagerly anticipates continuing support for ASEAN’s adoption of circular economy principles.
