Research Article: Circularity Assessment Protocol: Melaka, Malaysia

The Circularity Informatics Lab provided direction and support as a team from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), which served as the local implementing partner (LIP) for this project since the UGA team was unable to travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, conducted fieldwork in Melaka, Malaysia between October 2020 and March 2021. The municipal administration of the city, the Chief Resilience Officer (a top-level advisor who is in charge of organising and implementing a city’s resilience strategy and policy), and a bigger team from Urban Ocean provided assistance with the CAP.

Product and packaging evaluations in retail locations throughout the city were part of the fieldwork, as were key stakeholder interviews with representatives of the government, business, and nonprofit sectors, cost analyses of reusable goods and plastic substitutes offered in the city, visual audits of recycling contamination, identification of public waste and recycling collection bins, and litter transects in three demographic groups. This release includes a summary of the major findings from each spoke.
