Building a regional system of Institutions for a Circular economy transition in ASEAN – learning from the EU Experience.”

On 13th June 2023, The ASEAN Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue (ACSDSD), Mahidol University, Thailand, the host of the ASEAN Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform (ACESP), organised an International Resource Panel side event, “Building a regional system of Institutions for a Circular economy transition in ASEAN – learning from the EU Experience.” This EU-ASEAN hybrid event is held in conjunction with the 30th Meeting of the International Resource Panel in Bangkok on 13 June 2023, 16:30 – 18:00 (GMT+7) at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC), United Nations Building, Rajdamnern Nok Avenue, Bangkok, Thailand.

On this occasion, Mr Chirachai Punkrasin, Executive Director of ACSDSD, delivered opening remarks and set the stage for the discussion on the need to accelerate the CE transition. Mr Janez Potočnik, Co-Chair of the International Resource Panel, shared valuable insights on “The future is circular, or there is no future” and a preview of the IRP Global Resource Outlook 2024. The EU perspective on CE transition was given by Director Astrid Schomaker, Director for Global Sustainable Development at European Commission has kindly Recent CE Developments in the EU and the rationale for supporting the ASEAN and ACESP.

The second part of this event focuses on emerging institutional framework supporting a CE transition in ASEAN. This part features common obstacles and challenges to a CE transition in ASEAN, the introduction to ACESP’s objectives, and activities by Mr Treesuvit “David” Arriyavat, ACESP Secretariat, ACSDSD. Moreover, valuable insights on the Circular Economy framework for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) were given by Ms Joy Blessilda Sinay, a Senior Officer of Analysis and Monitoring on Finance and Socioeconomic Issues at the ASEAN Secretariat.

This event was participated by IRP meeting participants participated in this event, including panel members and government officials, ASEAN government officials, ASEAN Secretariat officers and Bangkok-based leading organisations on Circular Economy and relevant fields.

Dr Anthony Pramualratana, the Deputy Executive Director of ACSDSD, delivered closing remarks.
