The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government forbade the use of single-use plastic bags starting in 2020 by Pergub (Governor Regulation) No. 142 of 2019. The Government Regulation was ratified on December 27, 2019, and it became effective on July 1, 2020. Because many people contributed to the growing amount of plastic garbage even though they used single-use plastic bags for such a brief period of time, the administration of DKI Jakarta has made the decision to enact legislation banning them (once, 2-3 times at best). Moreover, single-use plastic makes up to 14% of the overall garbage in DKI.
